At Alexa Kritis Events, we’ve had the privilege of planning and executing countless weddings in the greater Tampa Bay region. Over the years, we’ve become experts in local wedding venues, and Tampa River Center is one we often recommend to our clients.

How would you describe Tampa River Center and its location?

Nestled in the heart of downtown Tampa, the Tampa River Center is in an ideal location for couples who want an easily accessible wedding venue that is central to the city. It’s close to I-275 and not far from popular downtown hotels, like The Barrymore Hotel, Hotel Tampa Riverwalk, Hotel Flor, and Le Méridien Tampa. 

It’s also near attractions like the Tampa Museum of Art, Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and the scenic Tampa Riverwalk, making it an excellent location for out-of-town guests who want a real taste of the city.

As for the venue itself, we love Tampa River Center because it’s a blank space — both inside and out. There is so much potential for complete customization, and we’ve loved getting the chance to transform the space to meet our couples’ needs.

Wedding Ceremony & Reception Locations at Tampa River Center

For ceremonies, the Tampa River Center has three options:

1. The Dock: Located right on the river, the dock site is only available on weekends between April and November. 
2. The Deck: Connected to the main event room, the deck is a covered terrace that overlooks the river and runs the length of the building.
3. The Lawn: With city views and palm trees swaying, the lawn is a lovely green space adjacent to the Tampa River Center.

The 2,880 sq. ft. indoor reception space can hold up to 200 guests for a seated dinner and up to 500 for a cocktail-style reception.

With a clean slate to work with, we love having full control to design the space in a unique and one-of-a-kind way. There are no pre-existing colors or fixtures that we need to work with, so couples can truly get a bespoke wedding experience tailored to their vision. With its open layout, Tampa River Center’s indoor reception space allows for creative layouts and personalized design.

What is special about this wedding venue in Tampa?

When you pick a waterfront wedding venue, you probably expect to enjoy some time outdoors on your big day. Tampa River Center allows for a seamless indoor-outdoor flow between the indoor reception space and al fresco terrace, separated by a set of doors that open all the way. It also offers easy access to the Riverwalk for picturesque photo opportunities.

We also love that this venue has a lot of parking, which is always a premium. Though parking is often an overlooked perk, it’s a great way to ensure a convenient experience for guests.

How have you transformed this venue in different ways to make it unique to each client?

Since Tampa River Center provides a blank slate for us to transform, we’ve found that draping makes a major difference in this venue. If you go for a site tour, you might feel turned off by the unsightly metal mechanical equipment along the ceiling, but don’t worry — we can definitely cover up any sore spots. 

Draping can make this venue completely unrecognizable in the best way, turning an otherwise plain space into the wedding of your dreams. For one client, we did an entire full ceiling draping installation. We even completely draped the interior hallway to make a dramatic dessert room. You couldn’t tell it was the same space!

Insider tips for hosting a Tampa River Center wedding

If you’re interested in hosting a Tampa River Center wedding, the most important thing to know is that it’s a city-run event space — not a dedicated wedding venue. As a result, don’t expect concierge-level service from the venue. In our experience, it’s a pretty hands-off experience with little to no interaction from the venue itself.

But don’t let that concern you. That’s why we’re here! As your Tampa wedding planning team, we manage all of the venue communication and bring the hospitality you expect during such an exciting time of your lives. You’ll get the full VIP experience from us while enjoying a beautiful space without having to juggle venue contacts.

Since it is city-owned, you’ll need to adhere to certain guidelines. For instance, Tampa River Center weddings must use one of their eight preferred caterers (all of which are great!) for all food and beverage, except for cake. As long as the baker is licensed and insured and can provide a certificate of insurance, you can use any baker you want.

For a complete customization, expect to add extra hours to the contract to ensure we can do a full buildout for that level of production. We’ll also need to plan your day-of timeline to ensure we’re completely out of the venue by the end of the night, as there’s no pickup the next day.

What budget level would you recommend for a Tampa River Center wedding?

While the Tampa River Center itself is affordable to rent, couples should anticipate investing more in the customizations required to transform the space. For a design transformation similar to Pam & Jack’s wedding or Amanda & Riley’s wedding, expect to budget a minimum of $1,000 to $2,500 per guest.

That investment includes the venue rental, planning fee, food & beverage, wedding photography & videography, entertainment (DJ or band), floral design, rentals, draping, stationery, linens, hair & makeup, and transportation.
